Understanding and Developing Efficient Transmission Oil Cooler Kits

About the Author

Rodney "Rocket Rod" is one of the Directors of Wholesale Automatics. He has been in the automatic transmission industry for over 30 years. Rodney mainly focuses on Marketing and New Projects and is the driving force behind creating new ways to bolt different parts together for our conversion projects. Rodney is also responsible for the majority of the entertainment at Wholesale Automatics.

Over the past few years, Wholesale Automatics Transmissions have been putting a huge effort into the development of their new range of automatic transmission oil cooler kits (sometimes referred to as “trans cooler” kits). As a company that already specialized in automatic transmissions we were in the ideal position to design and build these new transmission cooler kits.  This meant we were able to fully understand how to get maximum efficiency from the transmission oil cooler while making sure that it was done without causing any negative side effects to either the transmission or engine etc. As a result of this you get the best possible Australian made transmission oil cooler kit for your vehicle.

Each make and model vehicle presented us with quite different challenges in designing the best possible transmission oil cooler kit. Some of the challenges we came across were mounting issues due to other accessories like bull bars, winches and larger turbo intercoolers but we also found challenges when working with the factory fitted bypass or limiting valves that are mostly used in other counties with extremely cold climates. Here in Australia, New Zealand and for the most part of the United States we had the opportunity to be able to make the cooling system work much more efficiently by adjusting these systems to better suit our mild to higher temperatures. To get the best possible transmission oil cooler kit we conducted extensive field testing that included Light and Heavy Towing and also various Off Road conditions.

Based on the data collected we were able to make adjustments to the transmission oil cooler kits.  For example, we found on some models the transmissions the torque convertor generated massive amounts of heat under prolonged engine braking at very low vehicles speeds.  In these cases we were able to solve this problem with our dual cooler kits.  Our popular Ford Ranger dual oil cooler kit is an example of this.

It is also important to note that here at Wholesale Automatic Transmission we were able to understand the importance in reducing the risk of electrolysis “corrosion” by carefully choosing the materials that we work with during the construction of each mount. You will notice we never use stainless steel in the construction of our cooler mounts as stainless steel is a major cause of electrolysis in passenger vehicle i.e. if have you ever wondered why manufacturers never use stainless steel in the construction of their vehicles, now you know.  From our years of testing we also learnt the importance of using a one piece mount to get the best possible transmission oil cooler. When using two or more separate mounts you are forcing the oil cooler itself to share part of the load. Therefore, the cooler may experience flexing, twisting or shearing forces that can be created due to corrugated or rough roads. The one piece mount eliminates these loads as they are taken up by the mount and not the oil cooler.

Each of our transmission oil coolers comes as a truly complete DIY Kit including mounting hardware, full color step by step fitting instructions and quality cooler hose that has been inserted into flexible conduit for extra protection.

I had an idea, and that idea has finally come to fruition. Put the 5 Speed auto from the 100 Series into my 80 Series LandCruiser. But not just that, make it Tip-Tronic also. So out came the old H151 5 Speed Manual…
